Information
A rare Spode tea cup and saucer printed in medium blue with the 'Woodman' pattern introduced around 1814 and based on an engraving by Francis Eginton published in 1807. Beautifully potted, both pieces show a seated woman with child and a woodman standing alongside with his axe. The well of the cup has a print of the distant church seen in the background of the main scene and the rim repeats the lovely stylised leaf and floral border. In excellent condition; no chips, cracks or restoration. A very rare pattern, even rarer to find in good order. Fine blue rippled glaze. Both pieces printed SPODE in underglaze blue with workmen's marks. Diameter of saucer 14cm (5.5in), diameter of cup 8.5cm (3.4in)
