Information
Thought originally to be an Italian scene with church, it was subsequently discovered to be St Joseph's in Waterloo, near to Wellington's headquarters during the famous battle of 1815 (see image 5). The pattern was used for earthenware breakfast and tea sets, though few pieces seem to have survived and most references use a saucer to illustrate it. Here we have a lovely tea plate or 'muffin', printed in medium blue with the view framed by a dentil band and border of a flower garland threaded through six rings on a stippled ground. Finely potted with a pale blue rippled glaze and no foot rim. In excellent condition; no chips, cracks or restoration and showing little signs of wear. Impressed SPODE 22 and printed W workman's mark. Diameter 16.75cm (6.6in)
