Information

A superb indented soup plate in medium blue depicting Neptune with his trident riding across the waves with Britannia in his chariot. The border contains four heads in medallions each with female supporters and military accoutrements. The heads represent famous seamen including Lord Nelson, Howe, Hood and Collingwood. Produced by an unknown potter shortly after Nelson's death in 1805, as were many commemorative wares, the whole design is an allegory alluding to the release from earthly life of the famous Admiral. In excellent condition with a fine rippled glaze and no foot rim. Diameter 24cm (9.4in)
