Information

Probably by the short lived Staffordshire pottery of Adams and Bromley (1873 to 1886) though unmarked. This is a very unusual majolica 'motto' bread platter. 'Eat thy Bread with Joy and Thankfulness' in gothic script, with oak leaves and sheaves of corn at each end, with touches of pink, green and yellow. Perhaps the most beautiful feature of this stunning platter is the central well with its blue/green mottled glaze. It is not the usual 'mottled' effect glaze, as the colours have been allowed to run and gather in a very painterly way. I should add, the vivid green mottled reverse is as beautiful as the front. It's all good news, as this piece is in great condition, with no chips, cracks or restoration and very minimal signs of use. Typical majolica minute firing effects, stilt marks (reverse) and gentle micro-crazing intrinsic to these wares, but nothing to detract from the value or display qualities of this rare item. Width 34cm (13.4in), depth 29cm (11.4in)
