Susie Cooper Pottery Handpainted Purple/Brown 'Feather' Soup Bowl and Stand c1946 #1

A factory fire in 1942 had destroyed most of the lithographs in store, so when production resumed after the war, materials were in short supply and costly to replace. Ever resourceful, designs therefore concentrated on painting and other hand decorating techniques (banding, sgraffito etc.). This lovely soup bowl and stand is painted in 'purple brown' feathers intermingled with dots, creating a stylish design which anticipates postwar development. In good condition. 'Susie Cooper, England' signature mark with pattern number 2033. Diameter of bowl 11.5cm (4.5in)
