Information
A lovely and rare example of an Art Nouveau glass vase by Burtles, Tate and Co. of Manchester. A free-blown form with a striped opalescent body and applied pink flower with trailing stem and leaf. The rim of the vase is deeply ruffled and shades to cranberry with an opalescent edge. A pontil mark to the base finishes off this superb example of the glass maker's art. Known mainly for machine pressed glass, the Manchester glass houses were also famous for hand formed pieces. In 1893 Burtles, Tate and Co. advertised these vases as well as epergnes (see 'Decorative Victorian Glass' by Cyril Manley) and ewers (see 'Opalescent Glass' by Mike Carwile). Height 21.5cm (8.5in)
