Information

The identical footed bowl is in the Sunderland Museum collection, illustrated in their 'Potteries of Sunderland & District' book (plate 14). Copied from a silver shape with fluting and a beaded border, it is in reasonable condition; no cracks or repairs, but there is a small rim chip (image 4). The lustre has rubbed in places, especially inside the bowl, but this only adds to the overall antique effect and in no way detracts from this rare item. Platinum oxide was used to produce the 'silver' metallic finish, under exacting firing conditions. Unmarked (as are nearly all early metallic glazes), though probably Scott's Southwick Pottery, Sunderland. Height 8cm (3.1in), diameter 13cm (5.1in)
