Information
The identical jug is in the Sunderland Museum collection, illustrated in their 'Potteries of Sunderland & District' book (plate 14). Copied from a shape by London silversmith Hobbs (1831), it has a lovely 'griffon' handle and is in great condition; no chips, cracks or repairs. The lustre has rubbed from the high relief points, but this only adds to the overall antique effect and in no way detracts from this rare cream jug. Platinum oxide was used to produce the 'silver' metallic finish, under exacting firing conditions. Unmarked (as are nearly all early metallic glazes), though probably Scott's Southwick Pottery, Sunderland. Height 10cm (4in), length 15.25cm (6in)
