Stunning Wedgwood Majolica 'Email Ombrant' Reticulated Plate c1871

A superb Wedgwood majolica plate with a central panel of a Pre-Raphaelite girl wistfully clutching a shawl around her shoulders. Using the 'email ombrant' technique, the design is moulded in low relief then given depth through a coating of translucent glaze. Framed with a ribbon and ivy leaf inner border; the outer treacle glazed border is then pierced or reticulated. In excellent condition, with some mild crazing to the green central panel which is usual and would have happened during firing and does not detract. No chips, cracks or restoration. A fine example of these unusual and skilled processes which displays beautifully. Impressed 'Wedgwood' with date code for 1871. Diameter 22.25cm (8.75in)
