Information

A beautiful drainer or mazarine (sold as optional extras to meat platters and intended to sit in the centre to drain meat or fish juices) in the 'Bridge of Lucano' pattern based on engravings from 'Views of Rome and its Vicinity' (1796-98) by Merigot. Further research shows it could also be from a print of 'The Tomb of Plautius Lucanus' painted by H. Bibby and engraved by A.H. Payne. Because of the type of usage of these pieces, few survive in perfect condition. There are a couple of old chips on the underneath rim and a couple of stable 'star' cracks, which I would class as minimal and acceptable on an item like this. The quality of the print and glaze is lovely and the piercing (which includes 'teardrops') is very decorative, so the faults detract little from the overall display value. The pattern was produced by several potters, including Spode, but this is by an unrecorded manufacturer and the only one to name the view on pieces. Printed in underglaze blue 'Bridge of Lucano, Italy' on a ribbon surmounted by a crown. Length 34.25cm (13.5in)
