Information

A superb Spode dish printed in medium blue with a reversed scene of the 'Citadel near Corinth' from the Caramanian series. One of the rarer views from the series, it depicts boats on a river, a bridge leading to the ruined citadel and a distant view of Corinth in the background*. Lovely series border with elephants, oxen and rhino, etc.
In excellent condition; no chips, cracks or restoration and showing little sign of wear. A rare shape to find, especially in such good order. Finely potted with a good blue rippled glaze. Printed Spode with workman's mark in underglaze blue and impressed D. Width 27cm (10.6in)

*A Devonia shaped dish showing a standard version of the print is illustrated in 'Spode Transfer Printed Ware' by Drakard and Holdway p.243, while Volume II of 'The Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery' by Coysh and Henrywood illustrates an oval dish with this reverse printing p.58.
