Shelley 'Rich Butterfly' Lustre Ware Vase by Walter Slater c1920

A stunning large Shelley lustre vase designed by Walter Slater with a deep pink/mauve background gradually shaded to violet blue and painted with two large multi-coloured butterflies finished in best gold*. In excellent condition - no chips, cracks or restoration and showing little signs of wear. Rare to find, especially in such good order. Faint Shelley mark with Walter Slater signature. Height 21cm (8.25in)

*The Shelley pattern book archives describe the various elaborate production techniques as "printed butterflies; blown in under-glaze water green, pink and oven blue; fired, scratched off and enamelled; fired and lustred; overprinted in gold then raised and extended in gold".
