Information
The Jackdaw of Rheims is one of the Ingoldsby Legends - a series of tales written by Richard Harris Barham in 1840. It concerns a cheeky Jackdaw who steals the Cardinal's ring but returns it when he suffers from a curse put on the thief. He then becomes so pious he is canonised on his death. The series was in production from 1906 to 1930 and there are 16 known scenes. Here is a superb Herrick shape jug which depicts the Cardinal 'solemnly cursing that rascally thief'. In great condtion; no chips, cracks or restoration. Some clean glaze crazing typical of these wares, but still displays beautifully. Printed Royal Doulton mark with painted pattern number D2532. Height 16.5cm (6.5in)
