Information
A superb 'Lion Antique*' or 'Bacchus' pearlware tea cup and saucer attributed to William Smith of Stockton-on-Tees (1825-55). Printed in medium blue with bacchanalian cherubs, a goat and a lion framed by a border of grape vines. Unusual purple lustre trim. In excellent condition; no chips, cracks or restoration. A rare pattern and even rarer to find in such good order. Fine blue rippled glaze. Part printed marks, though illegible. Diameter of saucer 14cm (5.5in)
*There is another 'Lion Antique' pattern also attributed to William Smith which doesn't feature a goat or have the grape vine border (see Coysh and Henrywood 'Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery 1780-1880 vol. 1', page 220). There is also a pattern called 'Bacchanalian Cherubs' by Patterson and Co. (again Coysh and Henrywood 'Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery 1780-1880 vol. 1', page 31), so I would be tempted to refer to this pattern as 'Bacchus' (Gillian Neale 'Collecting Blue and White Pottery', page 122).
