An outstanding Wedgwood Majolica 'Sardinia' sardine box and cover in the form of a Mediterranean fishing boat with an anchor finial on the lid. Each end has a colourful catch of sardines, complete with fishing nets. The name of the boat 'Sardinia' is painted on the side. The whole is striped in olive green and white; classic colours of the argenta range of majolica produced by Wedgwood in the 1870s. Very rare to find in such good condition; there are no chips, cracks or restoration. There is slight staining to the interior and on the base, commensurate with age and use, but nothing to detract from this splendid piece. It displays beautifully and would form the centrepiece of any majolica collection. Impressed 'Wedgwood' and registration diamond for 23rd May 1878. Hand painted pattern no. 2646 in red. Length 24.75cm (9.75in)
