Rare Wade Cellulose Art Deco Figure 'Carnival' by Jessie van Hallen c1930 (Sold)
A superb Wade cellulose painted figure dating from around 1930 and designed by Jessie van Hallen, head designer for George Wade & Son. The figure is titled 'Carnival' and depicts a Pierrette or Columbine holding a bunch of balloons in one hand, her mask in the other and seated on a decorative plinth. These cellulose figures were only in production for a few years in the late 1920s to early 30s. In great general condition, though like most of this range there is some wear to the paint. Tiny specs here and there (hat, balloons), and some larger flecks to her skirt. These don't really detract at all, as her face and more prominent features are in lovely order. She is in good original condition without overpainting or restoration and displays beautifully. A charming and rare art deco figure. Marked to the base 'Wade' and handpainted 'Carnival .1.' Height 18.5cm (7.25in)
