A lovely Hilda Cowham child's mug designed for Shelley. Printed and hand enamelled with a red-headed fairy in modern dress making a garland of flowers with the help of her little fairy friends. A charming border of dancing fairies enamelled in pink and blue completes the theme. The reverse printed with the rhyme 'Fairies here, Fairies there, Dancing round on the bright green ground, Chubby Charlie and neat little Nan, Try and catch them if you can! Fairies everywhere'. Hand painted turquoise handle and rim. In excellent condition - no chips, cracks or restoration and little sign of wear. Rare to find, especially in such good order. Signed 'H Cowham' with 'Shelley China, England' and registration number 709690 (first series of her designs introduced in 1924). Height 7.5cm (2.9in)
