Information
Based on the Daily Mirror comic strip, this Royal Doulton series was only produced from 1927 to 1935. Featuring Pip the dog, Squeak the penguin and Wilfred the rabbit created by Uncle Dick (B J Lamb) and drawn by A B Payne, this scarce children's mug shows scene four of five 'Hullo Popski and Auntie - going to join the Gugnuncs*?'. In excellent condition, not even crazed. Rare to find, especially in such good order. Printed Royal Doulton mark with Daily Mirror underneath. Height 7cm (2.75in)
*The name 'Gugnunc' came about because unlike Pip and Squeak, Wilfred spoke only in baby-talk and 'gug' and 'nunc' were his favourite words. The Gugnunc club was formed and held parties and an annual rally at the Royal Albert Hall, raising funds for children’s hospitals and charities.
