Information

A superb George Jones majolica sardine box with original under tray. Decorated with a design of spiked anthemion type leaves on a turquoise ground, the lid with overlapping sardines on seaweed. The rims have a yellow ochre rope twist border and inside the box is a lovely contrasting pink. The well of the stand and bases of both box and stand have a fine mottled 'tortoiseshell' glaze. In excellent condition - no chips, cracks or restoration and showing little sign of wear (minor glaze rub to the mouth of one of the lower fish, barely noticeable). Rare to find in such good order. Displays beautifully. Stand with very faintly impressed 'GJ' monogram, box with painted number 1831 (described in the George Jones pattern books as Sardine Box and Stand, turquoise ground). Length of tray 21.5cm (8.4in)

Three colourways are illustrated in 'George Jones Ceramics 1861-1951' by Robert Cluett, page 63, figure 109.
