A rare first series Shakespearean Characters tab handled cake plate depicting Portia ("The quality of mercy is not strain'd") from 'The Merchant of Venice'. Introduced in 1912 with a superb polychrome background in various colour washes, the series was amended and added to in 1914 when a sepia background was used and a second series pattern number D3746 given. The rim and the detail of the handles are picked out in dark green enamel, emphasizing the art nouveau shape. In great condition; no chips, cracks or restoration and only some age related glaze crazing, more noticeable on the reverse and usual on these early pieces. Displays beautifully and an unusual item of early series ware. Printed 'Royal Doulton, England' with 'Portia' and painted D3596. Width with handles 26.75cm (10.5in)
