Information

From the mid 1930's and through the 40's, Maling produced a series of wall plaques with various designs embossed into the ware, providing guidelines for the paintresses to apply their colours, and creating a freehand effect. This Japanese garden landscape was one of the first themes produced, complete with tree peonies, cherry blossom, a bridge leading to a tea pavilion and lanterns hanging from a branch. One striking feature is the yellow zig-zag reflections of the lanterns in the dark blue water which forms the background. Lovely vibrant colours, beautifully painted and in great condition. There is some fine glaze crazing (seen on the reverse and mentioned for accuracy) consistent with age and production techniques, but this doesn't detract at all and isn't noticeable from the front. Stamped 'Maling, Made in England' and impressed date mark for 1937. Diameter 28.75cm (11.4in)
