A fine embossed 8247 shape dish showing John Cabot's ship 'The Matthew' in full sail on its voyage to search for the North-West passage to the Indies in 1497. The low relief detail hand painted in superb colour, capturing the scene brilliantly. In excellent condition; no chips, cracks or restoration. An early piece dated 1939 (the series was introduced in 1938). Royal Doulton and special series backstamps with impressed date. Width 22.25cm (8.75in)
