Large Shelley 'Rich Butterfly' Lustre Ware Vase by Walter Slater c1920

A stunning large Shelley lustre square shaped vase designed by Walter Slater with a lovely deep pink/mauve background gradually shaded to dark violet blue and painted with two large multi-coloured butterflies finished in best gold*. In excellent condition - no chips, cracks or restoration and showing little signs of wear. A rare shape to find, especially in such good order. Shelley England mark. Height 26cm (10.25in)

*The Shelley pattern book archives describe the various elaborate production techniques as "printed butterflies; blown in under-glaze water green, pink and oven blue; fired, scratched off and enamelled; fired and lustred; overprinted in gold then raised and extended in gold".
