Information

A fantastic pair of 'Christmas Lantern' vases - a design introduced by Walter Slater around 1920. Hand tinted mother-of-pearl lanterns draped with enamelled beads hang from leaves and branches on a deep blue lustre ground - an elegant and early art deco design. Both vases in excellent condition - no chips, cracks or restoration and showing little sign of wear. Rare to find, especially a pair in such good order. Printed Shelley marks (slightly obscured by the deep blue glaze) with painted 8659* pattern numbers. Height 24cm (9.5in)

*The Shelley pattern book archives describe the various elaborate production techniques as "printed in resist; blown all over in oven blue; fired and scratched off; tinted in electric green with gold spots and decoration enamelled over; lustred in pearl all over".
