Information

One of the finest figures I've ever had in my collection. 'Girl Reading' (La Leggitrice) was taken from Pietro Magni's sculpture, versions of which were exhibited in the 1850's and 60's throughout Europe and the US to great acclaim. Wearing a portrait medallion of Garibaldi and reading from the patriotic works of Niccolini, she is thought to represent the young Italy soon to come to maturity as a nation. This Bevington parian version shows great attention to detail with an amazing level of production skills involved. Draped in a simple nightgown, she sits sideways in a rush chair, the back of which props up her book. In excellent condition - no chips, cracks or restoration. Rare to find, especially in such good order. Impressed J & T B 105. Height 31.75cm (12.5in)

Reference:- The Parian Phenomenon page 241, fig.800

The final marble version exhibited in 1862 is now in the National Gallery, Washington, USA and can be seen here
