Information
A superb Clews jug in dark-medium blue with a pattern of a basket and vase of flowers, together with shells and an oriental style box. The striking design set against a background of a fine mesh net. The border around the inner and outer rim of the jug shows a stylised rose, scrolls, medallions and an urn with flowers. The same motif is applied to the wonderfully shaped handle. Condition cannot be faulted; remarkable given its age. Flattened base rim with a fine blue rippled glaze. Printed in underglaze blue 'Clews' on a pseudo-Chinese seal, with 'Warranted' and 'Ironstone China' on a ribbon. Height 14.8cm (5.75in).
A similar jug (slightly larger) is illustrated in Coysh 'Blue and White Transfer Ware 1780-1840' page 25.
