Early Royal Doulton Shakespearean Characters Series 'Portia' Cake Plate c1920

A fine Shakespearean Characters shallow dished plate depicting Portia ("The quality of mercy is not strain'd") from 'The Merchant of Venice'. Introduced in 1912 with a superb polychrome background in various colour washes. In great condition; no chips, cracks or restoration and only some minor age related glaze crazing, more noticeable on the reverse and usual on these wares. Displays beautifully and a lovely example of early series ware. Printed 'Royal Doulton, England' with 'Portia' and impressed 'Doulton' and date for February 1920. Diameter 22.5cm (8.9in)
