An early Mason's Ironstone soup plate decorated with an oriental garden scene surrounded by a rich cobalt border with floral panels and heavily gilded scrollwork. The rim is finished with a pale orange lustre glaze. This fine soup plate is in excellent condition; no chips, cracks or restoration and showing little signs of wear - most of the gilding is still intact. Impressed 'Mason's Patent Ironstone China' with 'Geddes, Kidston & Co' printed in iron red*. Diameter 26cm (10.25in)
*The Scottish Post Office Directory of 1828 lists Geddes, Kidston & Co. as a glass and pottery works with a retail shop at 74 Buchanan St., Glasgow where alongside their own products they sold Mason's china and probably other fashionable china and glass.
