*Robert Allen (1870-1929) trained under John Slater and in the 1890's became head of a studio group of artists and craftsmen producing the finest and most expensive of decorative wares. From the time of the Chicago Exhibition of 1893 onwards, his designs used raised and acid gold in Florentine and other Renaissance styles to complement the work of floral, landscape and other artists in his department. Wares designed and decorated by Robert Allen and artists in his studio were given RA-numbers written by hand. These hand-painted wares were not produced in great quantities and some items bearing RA-numbers would probably have been unique.
