Information
A superb York (shape 7781) 'Chivalry' sandwich tray with scroll handles. Designed by W Nunn and introduced by Royal Doulton in 1930. Seems to have been produced in small quantities up to about 1940. A romantic 17th century scene of one lady crowning another with a floral wreath, while a gentleman plays a lute and a wolf hound looks on. Rich enamelled colours of green, blue, purple and cerise are overprinted with lots of best gold to create a brocaded effect. An expensive technique used on only a few series ware designs. In excellent condition; no chips, cracks or restoration and all of the gilding is amazingly intact. Some minor 'long strand' crazing, barely noticeable and mentioned for accuracy. A beautiful and rare item. Printed Royal Doulton marks and impressed date for May 1930. Length 27.75cm (10.9in)
