Rare Spode Indian Sporting Series 'Chase After a Wolf' Soup Plate c1810

A rare indented shape soup plate from Spode's Indian Sporting series 'Chase After a Wolf'. In medium blue showing a wolf running with a lamb in its mouth, chased by dogs and Indian hunters with spears and stones. Based on Samuel Howitt's engravings from 'Indian Field Sports' published in 1807. It was this scene which first caught the eye of the great Spode collector and expert Sydney B. Williams who remarked on the quality of the print and the attractiveness of the blue which was used. The exotic border of tigers, bears and hogs reflects the themes of the series. In excellent condition with a lovely rippled blue glaze. Impressed 'SPODE 5' and printed 'SPODE' and 'CHASE AFTER A WOLF'. Diameter 24.5cm (9.6in)
