Rare First Series Royal Doulton Shakespeare Characters 'Shylock' Cake Plate D3596 c1912

A rare first series Shakespearean Characters tab handled cake plate depicting Shylock from 'The Merchant of Venice'. Introduced in 1912 with a superb polychrome background in various colour washes, the series was amended and added to in 1914 when a sepia background was used and a second series pattern number D3746 given. The rim and the detail of the handles are picked out in dark green enamel, emphasizing the art nouveau shape. In great condition; no chips, cracks or restoration and only some age related glaze crazing, more noticeable on the reverse where there is also light staining (see image 5) - usual on these early pieces. There is a minor firing flaw to the rim (see image 4), but again this doesn't detract. Displays beautifully and an unusual item of early series ware.
